The Brabant Wal - Location The Brabant Wal, lies along the border area between the Dutch provinces of Noord-Brabant and Zeeland and the border of Flanders, and is a remarkable landscape of outstanding natural beauty: It is a physical geographical feature rising to a maximum elevation of 20 metres. The steep sloping rim first begins to be apparent near the Belgian border just south of the village of Ossendrecht, from where it rises at Hoogerheide and Woensdrecht to its maximum height of +20 m NAP, it then slopes downward toward Bergen op Zoom and Halsteren further north and gently fades away into the flat landscape around the hamlet of Kladde (near Steenbergen). To the east of this natural ridge lie high sandy areas covered by woods, heath, sand dunes, shallow marshland and small fields and meadows. To the west lies a flat, polder landscape with old dykes, creeks and extensive fields. Located along this steep rim are some villages and the town of Bergen op Zoom, forming a picturesque landscape with a rich and colourful history, which has included wars and floods that have left their mark on the landscape. The transition of landscape from high to low, sand to clay, dry to wet and land which is rich in nutrients to one devoid of nutrients all combine to make up an area of outstanding natural beauty and one of the most important natural environments in The Netherlands.
